If you've ever wondered how to use your DSLR or Mirrorless camera underwater then this is an opportunity you can’t miss! Join Nikon Australia Ambassador, Matty Smith for two days of snorkelling or scuba diving with seals.

Seals are one of the most fascinating creatures you can ever dive with and photograph, because all they want to do is play with you – or around you – and photographers will tell you it is a truly amazing underwater experience. So come along and learn how to capture these incredible creatures as you swim alongside them.

Situated off the coast of Narooma at the Montague Island Nature Reserve, join Matty Smith as he takes your underwater photography deeper. Get an understanding of how to use your DSLR or Mirrorless camera underwater and walk away with new skills and some new underwater friends.

This course is best suited to:

  • Snorkelers
  • Free Divers
  • Certified SCUBA divers with 30+ dives and who have dived within the last 12 months.
  • Novice and advanced underwater photographers

NOTE: This course is weather dependent. In the event that it is cancelled, a full refund will be provided.

Here’s what your weekend will look like:


8.00am – We start off with 4 hours of classroom tuition from Nikon Australia Ambassador, Matty Smith to get you and your gear ready for the afternoon of fun with the seals.

Matty will cover:

  • Exposure techniques to be creative
  • Optimising Camera/Lighting Settings to shoot fast moving subjects underwater
  • Over/Under (Split Shot) Techniques
  • Underwater photography etiquette
  • Seal species identification and behaviour

After lunch we will pack the boat and head out to Montague Island to meet and get in the water with the seals. The afternoon trip duration is approx. 4 hours or when everybody has had their filled their memory cards! Matty will be on hand to answer any questions as they arise during our shoot. We will then Return to Narooma, unpack the boat and wash down.


Arrive early at the boat ramp in Narooma (Time TBC) to pack the boat and head back out to Montague Island for a morning shoot with our new friends. By now you will have reviewed your photos from yesterday and will be really honing your skills to get your trophy shot. We will then return to Narooma to unpack the boat, wash down and have lunch.

The afternoon classroom session led by Matty will cover:

  • Post process and work flow
  • How to prepare for competitions

The weekend will then wrap up at approximately 4.30pm and we can all head home with a bag full of great pictures.

Please Note: Snorkelling gear, masks, fins and snorkel will need to be hired. Please note that Scuba gear can also be arranged at the user’s request/expense. This schedule is subject to change depending on weather. Transport and accommodation are not included as part of this experience.
